Patch day reminder
If you want to go ahead and patch make a save of your 1.6 files so you can switch back to play on the server. It will likely take a couple days to get all the important stuff updated.

Re: Patch day reminder
the redstone fix is a big one too. it'll make a lot of compact stuff possible or at least easier. I wonder if shears means persistent animals and regrowing wool too.
Re: Patch day reminder
it does mean regrowing wool, also means chopping leaf blocks and being able to collect/place them!
As far as persistent animals, from what I have seen thats a future update.

Re: Patch day reminder
Just make a copy of your current bin folder in your minecraft folder.
Its usually located at
c:\users\<user name>\appdata\.minecraft\ for vista/7 users
or
c:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\.minecraft\
Not sure about mac, and to find the folder you may need to enable viewing of hidden files and folders.
Once ya do that, you can update your client to 1.7, and just switch out the bin folders when ya want to switch back and forth. I keep both of mine in my minecraft folder, the one im currently using is "bin" the other i label "bin-<version #>"
Hope that helps greg
