Portal 2 Mod

Post  Xacktar on Sat May 21, 2011 12:05 pm

I'm working on a portal 2 mod and I have map-making down pat. I was wondering if any of you guys know anything about adding custom sound to a Valve mod? Testing isn't the same without some crazy talking to you. Twisted Evil

So, have any of you guys made mods with Hammer/Valve tools before?

Edit: Some pics!

I have worked in hammer some, made a TF2 map. I have imported custom models and hats, but not custom sounds. The sounds I worked with were mostly default ones, but I'd bet that they are handled similar to textures, models and animations. Which would mean you add your custom sound to your src directory, and probably add a text file that defines your sound for the game engine there as well. Then I would hope that it would show up in hammer for you to use. Lots of good mapping & tool info at tf2maps.net, that is TF2 oriented, but there is a lot of information about how to work with the valve sdk stuff that goes beyond TF2.

Ooh. Thanks, Spiral. I'm sure one of their many tutorials there will help me.

I submitted one of my maps to a map contest. If you wanna give my custom map a shot, you can download it here : http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/downloads.php?view=detail&df_id=703

Just download the file, unzip it and doubleclick the BSP file and the game will load up the map. Its that easy.

Planned-on:

21 puzzle maps, 3 lobby maps and a Boss fight (if I can figure out a few technical details)

Cohesive narrative to the entire test.

1/3 of the maps will be 'damaged' by a little accident in the facility.

Working Portal 2 elements such as Elevators, Emancipation Grids, Lasers, Light Bridges, Crushers, Deadly Lasers, tractor beams, all cube types, all gel types, and even more Deadly Lasers.

Voice-over by a Cave Johnson impersonator. (If I can get him to do it)

3 hidden Companion Cubes to find in the mod.

Escalating difficulty, ranging from very easy to 'OMG STOP KILLING ME'

Completed so far:

17 Puzzle maps (basic puzzle setup, only 2 are completely detailed), 3 lobby maps

Working Elevators, Emancipation Grids, Lasers, Light Bridges, Crushers, Deadly Lasers, tractor beams, all cube types, all gel types, and even more Deadly Lasers.

2 Companion Cubes hidden.
