re: City Planning

Post  billlava on Sat Apr 02, 2011 12:14 am

I'm all for planning out some general builds that are beneficial for the city (esp. grinder, minecart hub, etc...) but I'm not sure that we should go as far as to declare an area a "city" and divide it up into lots and require people to build within a 'theme.' I really like the organic feel that the last server had going for it (organic as in spontaneously growing and popping up in an unplanned way, not organic like plants.) I think it would be cool if everyone tried to have some sort of presence near the spawn (this would naturally grow into a city, even if it turned out to be a chaotic jumbled mess) and then built a larger 'estate' out in the country (100's or even 1,000's of blocks away.)

So, as a general rule, something like try not to take up more than 300-400 sq. blocks in the spawn region, and leave at least 3 blocks in between buildings for roads and try not to be within sight of anyone else's 'manor' in the country (though it would be cool to build little central 'villages' for minecart stops.)

I guess that's just what I think would be cool. I like seeing the different random creative stuff that people come up with, and while I am in favor of keeping builds realistic, I don't think they need to be uniform in style.

Just my two cents. I'm in for the long haul either way!

No one said anything about lots, you can still build your home were you like. We are just going to try and have some community projects that are themed.

I had a go at P's building. In these pictures, the building isn't uniform in design because I wanted be able to compare different looks anyways here are the pics. http://justinsmith.imgur.com/spawn_building_ideas/all

and here is the style I like. Its Minoan looking. I'll do some more experimenting with colors.

While waiting on the new server to come up, i continued toying around with my "spawn idea" and added what could be the themed entrance to our underground subway.

This is actually more of what I meant by giant compass

It would be a courtyard and you would spawn directly on top of it. There would be roads going out in four directions which would serve as the main highways in the server. Every other road would build off of these.

If I may put in my 2 cents, having been in multiple town servers...

I would recommend trying to keep everyone together when doing a spawn area, trying to keep everyone building in the same area at first using roads to connect the city up while using a grid design similar to NYC or SLC with everyone building in theme in and around said road systems. In such a system, shops can be built, grinders, arenas, etc without the use of warping everywhere and sometimes feeling alone. Its a great way to build, and the one thing I would say was missing in the last AMC. (From what I hear the pre-AMC was like what I am describing).

Just saying, it helps keep a theme, helps get people a tad more neighbourly, and adds a tad of wonder to entering a city and not having to travel for a day to see the next building in said city Wink

** Not having logged in yet, I dont know if this is what has happened, nor am I trying to be pushy! I reread it and it looked pushy... lol

I really like this idea for a spawn point. Looks simple, yet clean and effective.

EDIT:
I had yet to get to the new versions when I posted this. I still like it.

@bill
I agree with you on themes. I don't think we need to necessarily dictate what theme a building in each individual's lot area is. However I think lots would be VERY beneficial for the immediate spawn area. They will ensure that a grid road system is maintained.

Outside of the spawn area, I think you should be free to build however you like within the block radius everyone decides is appropriate (this is to reduce lag caused by an excessively large map). If a build is in the way of a road extension, hopefully the road can go below or above said property to retain the cardinal grid system.

That's what we're going for with spawn for sure this time around steve. We're trying to keep the whole map a little more organized. There's plenty of room and lots of roads are going up in each direction. Smile We definitely have a great theme going but as of yet we haven't seen the need to really set up plots at spawn, but that's not off the table, either. We're hoping everyone grabs a small plot for their home/idea and runs with it. Smile

This is what I came up with for the oracle, I guess we couldn't find a picture because the building itself is called a tholos

Here is the program I used for the dome http://www.plotz.co.uk/plotz.php
I was going to use http://neil.fraser.name/news/2006/11/17/ but the site was down, Plotz is easier to use thankfully.

What about this:

http://opedog.imgur.com/cliff_temple_design#s1rbt

It's got the blue highlights which goes well with the sky, it's open air-ish, in that it has a stair up to view the city, and it should be tall enough to view from the ground.

Re: City Planning/Ideas

Greetings all,

I want to build a road, next week, from my villa through the desert to the lighthouse. Then probably hook a left and head on to the village.

I'll leave the desert , desert mostly. Maybe add a small oasis between the villa and the light house. (I wonder what wood and green wool palm trees will look like.) I also plan on a small plaza at the intersection behind the villa.

Any problems with that?

I'll get started Monday if I get a green light.
